Interior design has undergone a considerable change over the past decade, and many trends seem here to stay for the foreseeable future. A pattern that runs through most involves the use of sustainable materials and natural fibers. Here are some of the current trends slated to remain strong influences for room décor.

Neutral and Earthy Color

When deciding on the colors for your room, it is wise to choose a primary and secondary color to begin with and build outward from there. Having at least one of those colors be in the neutral family is a great start. The neutral pallet does not have to get limited to beige only; intense hues such as olive green, ochre, and burnt orange are good choices and harken to some of the key colors in nature. This color family comes in two distinct types: warm and cool. The warmer neutrals such as cream, brown, and taupe contrast well with the blue and green group members. Cool neutrals such as grayish blues and green-gray tones pair nicely with contrasting colors such as red and orange. Furnishings with wood elements work to blend well with this color family. Textural elements for upholstery such as velvet can help create a calm feeling.

Curves From The Past In The Present

In the 1960s and 1970s, the design lines in many design styles involved clean lines and curves, removing sharp edges from furnishings. Curved sofa sets with matching chaise lounge chairs are bringing asymmetrical looks to rooms. One of the best things about the rounded shapes of the furniture, particularly sofas, is that the style invites conversation and togetherness with a soft tone.

Functional Style

Lack of clutter and a focus on function are hallmarks of current design trends that look strong for the future. As more people are working and engaging in learning from home, creating practical designs that have multiple purposes is critical. One of the essential rooms where these features occur most often is in the kitchen. Kitchen islands used for dining with hidden charging areas and outlets for doubling as a workstation are not uncommon.

Get A Gym Workout At Home

Setting up a home gym was a considerable space commitment that many people did not want to do in the past. There are several space-friendly options for setting up a home workout area that will not take up too much room or overpower your décor are options. First, look at the garage or basement space to set up items such as treadmills, spin bikes, or weight benches. For more compact workout trends, consider an interactive mirror that hangs on the wall and connects to a myriad of workout choices on demand that include the use of easy-to-store equipment such as jump ropes, resistance bands, and weights.

Bringing Floral Elements Inside

A great way to add pops of color and is a classic element comes in the form of floral patterns. Florals are most potent when paired with neutral hues, adding in wallpaper with contrasting colors in warm and cool colors depending on the neutral chosen. Choosing accents around the room with florals such as pillows, slipcovers, or area rugs are other ways to incorporate the power of flowers into your room design.

Biophilic-Based Elements in Room Design

This type of décor style has been in use since its creation in the 1960s; the push for biophilic design components is strong. The use of natural elements such as foliage and vegetation, realistic lighting, and furnishings made from sustainable, raw materials are a hallmark of this style. The thinking behind this trend remains a desire to create a mentally and physically healthy environment by implementing things found in nature. Indoor water gardens, fountains, living walls, and vertical gardens are all ways this style gets used regularly.

Do Not Fear Contrast

No matter the style chosen, a color pallet in a room does not have to blend. Using contrasting colors can liven up space and create a subtle impact. Good ways to introduce contrast can be with a single accent wall or the addition of pillows for furnishings, or table lamps in a solid contrasting rather than complementary color.

Functional Home and Office

In the present, people can work off a multitude of mobile devices, and a dedicated home office with a large desk and cumbersome computer setup is a thing of the past. Foldup desks that sit flat against the wall until called into service are ideal for small spaces, and leaning ladder shelves are space-saving storage ideas. Guest rooms or a large closet can double as work areas.

Overall, the trends that are fast become classics all have some common themes such as multiple functions, clean lines, and the use of natural and sustainable materials.
